Dryvit ®

The Dryvit System

Dryvit is one of the largest EIFS manufacturers in the world and they did an excellent job of marketing the EIFS product. In fact they did such a good job that the entire industry was know as Dryvit until recent years. Dryvit did much like Rollerblade®  did with inline skates. We now, for the most part, refer to the industry as the EIFS industry, and there are a few manufacturers of the EIFS product, Dryvit being one of them. Each manufacturer of EIFS has there own terminology of the products, so it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the basic Dryvit lingo. The Do It Yourself EIFS Repair Kit – The Trowel

The Do It Yourself EIFS Repair Kit

The trowel is a very important tool in the EIFS Repair Kit

The EIFS Repair Kit includes a trowel which is your application tools. The shape of the trowel is perfect for scoping out the cement mix and gives you a great way to spread EIFS Repair Kit Trowelthe cement smoothly onto the wall. The EIFS cement mix is made to be applied very thin, approx. 1/8″ thick with little waves or bumps in the cement coat. The cement coat should be applied with great detail to perfection as the finish coat will only look as good as the cement coat under it. If you can not get it smooth you can let you best work dry and come back and sand it smooth. The best think to sand the cement coat with is floor sand paper. You can find floor sand paper at your local home improvement store. Another thing to keep in mind is that your cement will dry up after time and become very hard to work with. The dry time has a lot to do with the temperature. If you are working on a cloudy 60 degree day you may have about 45 minutes to work with your cement before it begins to show signs of drying up. But if you are out on a sunny 90 degree day you may only have about 10 minutes to complete your project. Keep in mind that the EIFS material should never be applied in weather that is below 40 degrees.

Determining what moisture barrier product to use

Exterior Insulation and Finish System Installation Process

Determining what moisture barrier product to use

There are several moisture barrier products out there these days and determining which one to use has a lot to do with what type of EIFS application you are going to be using. Are you going to be applying over OSB, Brick, a Block wall. The budget can also a determining factor. There are two good products which are; a rolled on air and moisture barrier and a wrap. The wrap is known as StuccoWrap® which is a lot like traditional Tyvek® , but it has ridges in it to help drain moisture. And the rolled application which all manufacturers have a version of. I personal like to use Senergy’s Senerg-Shield-R® version of the product. Either way you go they both work great. It is mandatory that you use Stucco Flashing Tape around the windows and doors. Stucco tape is a moisture barrier tape that is a rubberized asphalt membrane and it’s top layer is polyester which Alpha Base Coat adheres to very well.

Keeping your tools clean

EIFS Repair Tip Of The Day for 3-11-2011

Keeping your tools clean.

For an EIFS applicator it can be hard to keep the tools clean. On a really hot day it only takes a matter of minutes for the alpha base coat or finish coat to dry up on the tools. After the material is dry on the tools it is a task to get it off. There is an easy fix to this problem. Simply carry a bottle of WD-40 with you and spray the back side of your hawk and trowel with it. The base coat or finish will dry on the tools but it scraps right off. With a layer of oil between the trowel and the mud it allows the mud to fall right off very easily.

Apply 100% acrylic polymer finish coat over alpha base coat

EIFS – Exterior Insulation and Finish System installation process

Applying the Finish Coat

The EIFS Finish Coat is applied over the Alpha Base Coat. The finish is troweled on and floated with a plastic float. It is very important to have a smooth surface for the finish to be troweled over, as the finish is only about a 1/16 of an inch thick. There are a few textures to choose from. The main three textures are Fine (which has a small aggregate and looks smooth or fine) , Medium (medium has a slightly larger aggregate and has a pebble look), and Coarse (coarse has even a larger aggregate and has a classic stucco look).  When floating the finish it is very important that all floaters use the same technique (every one uses 9″ circles) to keep the wall looking the same everywhere.

A quick overview of the EIFS installation process

EIFS installation process

An overview of the Exterior Insulation and Finish System or EIFS installation process

Exterior Insulation and Finish System / EIFS  installation process is as follows:

EIFS (Exterior insulation and Finish Systems) also known as synthetic stucco.

That was a quick overview of the EIFS process

Kick out flashing is a very important part of the EIFS install that seems to be over looked by contractors. We have an article explaining kick out flashing including what it is used for and how it should be installed.

Another important aspect of an EIFS installation is a water drainage system which we have covered in depth for you in a separate article as well. The Water Drainage System is very important to get right because if you don’t the substrate of the structure could be damaged if it is not used. We have taken the Water Management System on huge step further with our Water Prevention System.
