Keeping your tools clean

EIFS Repair Tip Of The Day for 3-11-2011

Keeping your tools clean.

For an EIFS applicator it can be hard to keep the tools clean. On a really hot day it only takes a matter of minutes for the alpha base coat or finish coat to dry up on the tools. After the material is dry on the tools it is a task to get it off. There is an easy fix to this problem. Simply carry a bottle of WD-40 with you and spray the back side of your hawk and trowel with it. The base coat or finish will dry on the tools but it scraps right off. With a layer of oil between the trowel and the mud it allows the mud to fall right off very easily.

A good plasterer will use a Curry Trowel | EIFS

EIFS Repair ‘Tip Of The Day’ for 3-9-2011

A good plasterer will use a Curry trowel.

It is pretty common knowledge that Curry trowels are the best, well at least to all of us season vets of the plastering industry outEIFS Repair Curry Trowel there.  For everyone one else take my word for it, there is no better trowel on the market. If you are a EIFS guy, and you don’t have a Curry trowel in your tool bucket, then get you one you’ll love it. I personal use a 14 x 5 Curry Finishing Trowel which in my option is the perfect sized trowel for EIFS. It takes several months to break in a new trowel but after that you are golden with one of these trowels. It does not matter if you use Dryvit, Senergy, Master Wall, Sto or any other material a Curry trowel works the best with them all.

When it comes to the bottom of the building where it meets the ground or the concrete or even a roof line. I always see rough looking edges instead of a nice clean edge. If you use this tool you will never have a rough looking bottom edge again. The reason the edge looks so bad is that a normal corner tool will not fit at the bottom. With the Wind lock 45 degree corner tool you will have great looking edges every time. You do have to buy a left and right 45 degree corner tool.

EIFS Repair Job Site Change Orders

EIFS Repair Tip Of The Day for 3-7-2011

Keeping Change orders with you on the job site.

It never fails, your on a job, and the contractor wants to add something. “Don’t worry I will take care of you just do this asap please” he tells you. Well, that is when a change order comes in handy, right when he needs something done, and will sign a change order to pay for it, just because, he needs it done. I know this is not something that just happens in the EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System) industry but it happens on every construction site with every trade. I can not tell you how many times I have done something without a change order and then never got payment for it. Now with change orders in the truck at all time I get paid for all my extras thrown in along the way. You would be amazed at how many must have done little projects got forgotten after the change order came out. Sounded like they would die if I did not do it but now that they have to pay for it it is all of a sudden not so important.

EIFS Repair – How to float the finish

EIFS Repair – Tip of The day 3-6-2011

How to float the finish coat.

When floating the EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System) Finish coat you will need a plastic float, a trowel and a clean bucket of water with a brush. You will rub the plastic float over the finish on the wall in a circular motion. Every few circles you will clean the plastic float with the trowel. You will do this two times the first time quickly with a firm grip and some pressure on the float making sure to hit every spot on the wall and taking any and all trowel lines away. The second time will be much lighter to clean up any imperfections. After the first round with the float you should make sure you clean the float with your clean water and bucket brush. It is important not to put the float back on the wall while it is wet.

Consistency of the Finish

EIFS Repair Tip Of The Day – 3-5-2011

The consistency of the finish

I think everyone has there own preference on the consistency of the finish but really if there is too much water added the finish will bleed through and if there is no water added it will  tend to roll on you. The best practice is to add a large cup of water like a 24 oz cup. If you are using tint packs with your finish that will give you enough water to make sure you get all the tint out of the tint pack. That is more of an estimate than a solid amount. If it is really hot you could even use 32 oz’s. One of the key things is to make sure you add the same amount to every bucket. I find Senergy, Dryvit and Master Wall all react about the same to the water.

EIFS – Boxing off your finish

EIFS Repair – Tip Of The Day – 3-4-11

Boxing off your finish.

Before you run your finish it is very important to make sure every bucket is exactly the same color. If it is not it is important to box the finish off. Which means you get an empty bucket and start pouring half a bucket into the empty and continue mixing the buckets and spinning them with a drill and paddle until all the buckets have been mixed together so all the finish is exactly the same color. If you are using tint packs this is a good idea and you should always have one guy appointed to mixing the tint packs in the finish.

note: it is a good idea to buy your finish for your job all at the same time as the finish comes in batches and one batch maybe a little different than the next which can alter the color a shade at times.

EIFS how too, box off your finish.

EIFS – Floating the Finish Coat

EIFS Repair Tip Of The Day for 3-3-2011

Floating the Finish Coat

When floating the finish it is important that everyone uses the same technique. If one guy is floating the wall in circles and another guy is sing figure eights then you float job is not going to match. My rule of thumb is nine inch circles  counter clockwise. This is a very important detail that is often overlooked. So, from now on look down the wall at your fellow EIFS applicator floating with you and make sure you are both doing the same thing. Trust me you jobs will look much better.
